Fairtrade Fortnight Breakfast
Before you finish eating breakfast in the morning, you’ve depended on more than half of the world. Martin Luther King Jr
But what didn’t he say?
There are times of the year when many people who grow the food we eat for breakfast can’t feed their own families.
Shocking, isn’t it?
Yes, the problem is so common that farmers & workers around the world have different names for it…
- Seasons of hunger
- The thin months
- The months of the big stomach
- The months of water
- The hungry months
- Times of silence
Hear from someone who knows.
Before fairtrade we were losing money which meant we had to buy less food. I had either breakfast or lunch. The portions were small and didn’t leave us full.
Farmers like Leonidas know what it’s like to work hard and still not earn enough to stop their families going hungry.
We had to measure the amount of food: the rice, the meat...those were critical times… Leonidas Jimenez Chaparro, banana farmer, Colombia
